FAQ
Q: How much does it cost?
A: Each fire costs £25 for low temp and £30 for mid and high temp.
Q: Can I fire just one piece instead of booking a whole kiln?
A: Sometimes, if we have enough space during our own fires we can accommodate to single item fires. In these circumstances it can take some time until your piece is ready as it depends on when we can fit your piece in. This can take up to 6 weeks. Get in touch for prices on individual pieces.
Q: How quickly can I fire?
A: It depends on our schedule. Sometimes we’re available on the same day, sometimes it can take a couple of weeks or so if we have other fires planned ahead. Get in touch for information on our availability but please plan ahead. We suggest to be at least one or two weeks ahead of any deadlines as we cannot promise availability.
Q: What temperatures do you work with?
A: Bisque: 950C.
Low Temp Glaze: 1050C. / Mid Temp Glaze 1150C. High Temp Glaze: 1250C.
Q: Can you fire to my preferred temperature/ settings?
A: No. we only provide rental fires using our current settings. Please make sure to let us know your required temperature every time you book with us.
Q: What happens if my pieces explode/ break/ get damaged during the fire?
A: Unfortunately we cannot take any responsibility over damages or breakages during firing. You will still have to pay full price even if your items get damaged. If you aren’t aware of what damages that can happen during firing we suggest that you do proper research on ceramics prior to your first firing. Things like air pockets, improper attachments, moisture etc can cause cracks and breakages during firing.
Q: Do I need to clean the bottom of each piece clear of glaze?
A: YES! We will not fire any items with a glazed bottom as this will stick to our kiln shelves and permanently damage them. Any shelves damaged by runny glazes/ glazed bottoms will incur a charge of £30 per shelf in order to replace them.
Q: Do you package our pieces for collection?
A: Yes, we pack all of your items using the materials you brought your pieces in to fire. If you do not provide a box/ bag or tissue/ bubble wrap we will not have anything to package your items with. This will not be a “shipping worthy” packing but enough for you to take them away.
Q: What happens if my pieces don’t all fit in one kiln load?
A: We take care in loading the kiln as best as we see fit. If there are any items left behind that we can’t fit in (even though you thought it would all fit) you can either take the pieces back with you or hire another kiln fire. We are very careful not to over-load the kiln as not to cause any issues or damages to your pieces, so if we think that we can’t fit any more pieces we won’t take chances. (Especially on glaze fires).
We recommend that you look at our kiln specifications before making your pieces. Items can only fit on our shelves if they’re under 8/9cm tall. Taller items require the top shelf, meaning you will only have 1x 35cm round shelf available.
